Hamilton takes title lead after dominant Italian GP win

Mercedes Lewis Hamilton wins the Italian GP ahead of team-mate Valterri Bottas and Ferrari’s Sebastian Vettel as Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo climbs from 16th to finish 4th.

Tyre choice

After yesterday’s wet qualifying, the drivers are allowed to start on whatever tyre they want. Max Verstappen, Daniel Ricciardo, Jolyon Palmer and Fernando Alonso will start on the Soft while everyone else starts on the Supersoft tyre.


The lights go out and Lewis Hamilton remains in the lead while Esteban Ocon overtakes a cautious Lance Stroll round the outside of turn 1 for 2nd. After being overtaken by Kimi Raikkonen into turn 4, Valterri Bottas gets his own back by overtaking his fellow Finn round the outside of turn 11 for 4th. Lap 3, Bottas overtakes Stroll for 3rd down into turn 1. After battling Felipe Massa through turn 1 and 2, Max Verstappen has come off worse after contact was made. The Red Bull driver now has a front-right puncture and is limping back to the pits. Lap 4, Bottas overtakes Ocon for 2nd in a similar move to Stroll down into turn 1 and up into 2nd place.

Lap 5, Sebastian Vettel is making slow progress in the race but now overtakes Lance Stroll for 4th place into turn 8. Meanwhile, Max Verstappen pits receives a new front wing, goes onto the Supersoft tyre and rejoins in 20th. Lap 8, Vettel overtakes Ocon for 3rd with a move down into turn 1. Lap 11, Nico Hulkenberg pits, switches to the Soft tyre and rejoins in 18th. Lap 16, Kimi Raikkonen pits in a bid to undercut Ocon and Stroll ahead. He goes onto the Soft tyre and rejoins in 11th. Ocon reacts, pitting the following lap, going onto the Soft tyre and rejoining ahead of Raikkonen.

Lap 19, Lance Stroll finally reacts and pits. It’s a slow pit-stop for the Williams crew and it’s that what costs Stroll the advantage. Stroll rejoins behind Esteban Ocon and Kimi Raikkonen. Jolyon Palmer has been given a 5 second time penalty for leaving the track and gaining an advantage. The Brit was given the penalty after his scrap with Fernando Alonso. Lap 22, Felipe Massa pits. It’s a much better stop for the Williams pit crew as Massa rejoins in 10th and not far behind the Ocon/Raikkonen and Stroll fight.

Back at the front, Lewis Hamilton leads a Mercedes 1-2 ahead of Valterri Bottas by 4 seconds. Sebastian Vettel is in a race of his own about 11 seconds behind Hamilton. Lap 26,Kimi Raikkonen finally overtakes Esteban Ocon round the outside of turn 1 for 6th. Lap 31, Renault are retiring Jolyon Palmer and he becomes the first retirement of the race. Lap 32, Vettel pits, switching to the Soft tyre and rejoining in 4th. Lewis Hamilton also pits, switching to the Soft tyre and rejoining in 2nd. Lap 34, Valterri Bottas pits. The Finn goes onto the Soft tyre and rejoins in 2nd.

Bad news for McLaren Honda. Stoffel Vandoorne is going slowly and it’s obviously an engine failure. The Belgian heads to the pits and retires. Lap 39, Daniel Ricciardo pits and is the last one to do so. The Australian switches to the Supersoft tyre after starting on the Soft tyre and rejoins in 5th. The Red Bull driver is instantly quick and by lap 41, he overtakes Kimi Raikkonen in an daring move down into turn 1. The other Red Bull driver of Max Verstappen has also made very good progress as well and is now up to 10th after overtaking Kevin Magnussen. Lap 52, it will be a double retirement for McLaren as the team tell Fernando Alonso to retire. The future of the team and double champ will be revealed in the next few days. Lewis Hamilton wins ahead of Valterri Bottas and Sebastian Vettel.
