Hamilton wins after exciting Canadian GP

Mercedes Lewis Hamilton wins the Canadian GP ahead of team-mate Valterri Bottas and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo as Williams Lance Stroll scores his first points of his career at his home race.

Tyre choice

Everyone will start on the Ultrasoft tyre except from Kevin Magnussen and Pascal Wehrlein who will start on the Supersoft tyre.

Race

The lights go out and everyone makes a mediocre start. Heading down to turn 1, Valterri Bottas locks up on the inside of the track with Lewis Hamilton leading. To the outside of Hamilton is Sebastian Vettel and to the outside of Vettel is Max Verstappen. Verstappen swoops round the outside of Vettel and clips Vettel’s front wing en-plate.  Hamilton lead through turn 1, 2 and 3 ahead of Verstappen, Bottas, Vettel and Daniel Ricciardo. Whilst Hamilton leads, carnage happens behind. Going into turn 3, Carlos Sainz makes contact with Romain Grosjean and Sainz spins, heading backwards into turn 3. The rear of Sainz’s car hits Felipe Massa. Sainz is in the wall and out with Massa sustaining quite a lot of damage. At the end of the lap, Grosjean pits for a new front wing. The Safety Car is out. Lap 3, The Safety car is called in.

Lap 5, Sebastian Vettel pits, changing his front wing and swapping onto a set of Supersoft tyres. He rejoins in 18th place. Lap 10, Lewis Hamilton still leads with a gap of 3.3 seconds to Max Verstappen in 2nd. Lap 11, Verstappen’s good start to the race is over as he pulls over to the side of the track just before turn 3. The Virtual Safety Car is called out for the marshals to rescue Verstappen’s car. Lap 12, Nico Hulkenberg pits, going onto the Supersoft tyre. Lap 14, Daniil Kvyat has been given a drive- through penalty for failing to regain position before the Safety Car line. Lap 17, Kimi Raikkonen pits going onto the Supersoft tyre and rejoining in 7th.

Lap 18, Daniel Ricciardo pits. He goes onto the Soft tyre and rejoining in 6th. Lap 19, Sergio Perez pits. He goes onto the Supersoft tyre and rejoins in 6th just behind Ricciardo. Both Ferrari’s of Vettel and Raikkonen are making their way back through the field with Vettel overtaking Lance Stroll into turn 13 on lap 20 and Raikkonen overtaking Fernando Alonso in the same place on lap 21. Lap 24, Valterri Bottas pits. He rejoins in 2nd on the Soft tyre. Lap 26, Kevin Magnussen has been given a 5 second time penalty for overtaking under the VSC. Stroll pits and rejoins in 17th.

Lap 31, Lewis Hamilton pits. The Brit rejoins in 1st on the Supersoft tyre. Esteban Ocon also pits, going onto the Supersoft tyre and rejoining in 6th. Hamilton now leads ahead of Valterri Bottas, Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez and Kimi Raikkonen. Lap 38, Lance Stroll overtakes Jolyon Palmer before turn 13 and up into 14th place. Lap 42, Raikkonen pits for the second time and goes onto the Ultrasoft tyre. He rejoins in 7th as Fernando Alonso pits on the next lap for the Supersoft tyre. He rejoins in 11th. Are points on the cards for McLaren and Alonso today?

Lap 46, Lance Stroll overtakes Fernando Alonso round the outside of turn 13 and is now up into 11th place. Lap 50, Sebastian Vettel pits. He goes onto the Ultrasoft tyre and rejoins in 7th with Kimi Raikkonen ahead in 6th. The job for Raikkonen and Vettel is to close down the battle for 3rd in the final laps. Lap 54, Daniil Kvyat pits, serving his time penalty and changing tyres. It’s a long stop as right rear is proving difficult and the team tell Kvyat to switch off the car. His day is over. His retirement promotes Stroll into the top 10.

Lap 61, Kimi Raikkonen goes straight on at turn 13 rejoining after the designated bollard. Due to that, Sebastian Vettel overtakes him. Raikkonen is now struggling with his brakes dropping 12 seconds behind Vettel in only 2 laps. Lap 64, Vettel has caught up to the battle for 3rd which includes: Daniel Ricciardo, Sergio Perez and Esteban Ocon. Lap 66, Vettel overtakes Ocon for 5th into turn 1. Lap 69, the misery continues as Fernando Alonso pulls over at turn 8 and records another retirement. He was running close to the top 10 and is out. Vettel overtakes Perez before turn 13 and up into 4th place. Lap 70, Lewis Hamilton eases to his 6th win in Canada ahead of Valterri Bottas and Daniel Ricciardo.

Race stats

  • Lewis Hamilton recorded a 4th Grand Slam. The Brit has now done the quadruple of pole, fastest lap, every lap led and victory in four races.
  • Hamilton’s pole/victory double came ten years after he scored his first career pole and win at the same circuit in 2007.
  • Valtteri Bottas meanwhile finished second to complete Mercedes’ first one-two of the season.
  • Lance Stroll came home in 9th to score his first F1 points. At 18 years 7 months and 13 days old, Stroll is also the second-youngest points scorer in F1 history.
  • Toro Rosso recorded their first double DNF of the season with Carlos Sainz Jr and Daniil Kvyat retiring.
