F1 returns after the mid season break and returns to racing at Belgium. Everything now gets serious as drivers and teams push in the second half of the season.
History of the Belgian GP
One of the drivers favourite’s, Spa-Francorchamps is one of the highlights of the F1 calendar along with the British and Monaco GP. The circuit includes some famous corners like Eau Rouge and the Bus Stop chicane. Over the years, it has witnessed some spectacular racing and memorable moments. Some include: Michael Schumacher crashing into David Coulthard in 1998, Sebastian Vettel losing control and crashing into Jenson Button in 2010 and of course in 2014 where Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg collided.

For this weekend, Mercedes have gone with a completely different strategy compared to chief rivals, Red Bull and Ferrari. Lewis Hamilton will take 3 Medium, 6 Soft and 4 Supersoft tyres meanwhile Nico Rosberg will take 4 Medium, 5 Soft and 4 Supersoft tyres.
Ferrari have opted for the same strategy for both drivers of Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Both will take 1 Medium, 5 Soft and 7 Supersoft tyres. Red Bull have also opted for the same strategy for Daniel Ricciardo and Max Verstappen. Both will take 4 medium, 3 Soft and 6 Supersoft tyres. Which team will have the best strategy to win?
Hamilton takes 30 place grid penalty
Lewis Hamilton will start from the back for Sunday’s Belgian GP after Mercedes fitted a fresh engine. By running his sixth MGU-H and turbo in FP1 and seventh of those two components in FP2, Hamilton has accrued grid penalties of 30 places. This is the best chance for an engine change as Belgium and Italy will be the best options to overtake from near the back.
McLaren’s Fernando Alonso will take a 35 grid penalty for an engine change along with Sauber’s Marcus Ericsson but will incur a 10 place grid penalty for Sunday’s GP
Sauber finally able to bring upgrades
Sauber has finally been able to put upgrades into production following its recent takeover by Longbow Finance. A new front wing with short nose, floor and front and rear brake ducts will be run on Friday morning for practise 1.
The package represents the first major update to the C35 all season, with a lack of finance and an uncertain future leaving the car unchanged since pre-season testing.
Honda spend engine tokens for Belgium GP
Honda has spent seven of its Formula 1 engine development tokens on an internal combustion engine and turbo compressor update for the Belgian Grand Prix. Honda has now used 29 of its tokens and has three remaining to use throughout the second half of the season.
