Hungarian Race Round 11

Lewis Hamilton takes the championship lead after win in Hungary ahead of team-mate Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo.

Tyre choice

Its looks like today it could be between a 2 and a 3 stop strategy. Daniil Kvyat, Sergio Perez, Kimi Raikkonen, Jolyon Palmer, Felipe Massa, Rio Haryanto and Marcus Ericsson will start on the Soft tyre with everyone else starting on the Supersoft tyre.

Race

Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton get off the line good but not great and as they approach turn 1, Hamilton is on the inside, Rosberg is stuck in the middle and Daniel Ricciardo is on the outside. Hamilton takes the lead ahead of Ricciardo and Rosberg. Rosberg doesn’t give up and goes round the outside of Ricciardo into 2nd place during turn 2. Hamilton leads ahead of Rosberg, Ricciardo, Max Verstappen and Sebastian Vettel. Lap 3, Hamilton sets the fastest lap of a 1:27:132.

Lap 5, Lewis Hamilton has a gap of 1.6 seconds to Nico Rosberg in 2nd while Jenson Button is going slowly. Button comes on to his team radio and the team inform him its a brake issue and is overtaken on track by Valterri Bottas and Nico Hulkenberg. Lap 6, Nico Rosberg now responds with the fastest lap of a 1:26:422 while Kimi Raikkonen is making progress and is up into 11th place. Lap 7, Jenson Button pits and goes onto the Soft tyre having the brake problem fixed having help from the team. Lap 9, Button is now under investigation from the stewards having used illegal radio communications to help him solve the brake issue. Lap 10, Button comes in for his drive through penalty, Button describes this as “going to be the race from hell”.

Lap 14, Lewis Hamilton sets the fastest lap of a 1:25:504 with Sebastian Vettel, Nico Hulkenberg and Romain Grosjean pit for the Soft tyre. Lap 15, Daniel Ricciardo, Fernando Alonso and Esteban Gutierrez pit for the Soft tyre. Lap 16, Lewis Hamilton Max Verstappen, Carlos Sainz and Valterri Bottas pit for the Soft tyre as well. Lap 17, Nico Rosberg pits for the Soft tyre and emerges 2nd behind Hamilton is first.

Lap 20, Lewis Hamilton looking to be struggling with his Soft tyre and has team-mate Nico Rosberg right behind. Lap 22, Daniel Ricciardo responds with fastest lap of a 1:25:433 and is catching Hamilton and Rosberg only 5 and a half seconds behind. Lap 27, Daniil Kvyat has been given a 5 second penalty for speeding in the pit lane. Lap 29, Kimi Raikkonen pits, having started on the Soft tyre swaps them for a set of Supersoft tyre. Lap 32, Raikkonen now sets the fastest lap on a new set of Supersoft tyres and sets a lap of 1:24:254.

Lap 34, Daniel Ricciardo tries to force Mercedes or Ferrari into a pit stop as he pits on goes onto the Soft tyre. Lap 38, Ricciardo’s team-mate, Max Verstappen pits and goes onto the Soft tyre as well. Lap 39, Nico Hulkenberg and Jolyon Palmer take their battle into the pit stops and its the Renault of Palmer who emerges in front ahead of Hulkenberg. Lap 41, Lewis Hamilton and Sebastian Vettel pit for the second and final time onto the Soft tyre.

Lap 42, Nico Rosberg pits and goes onto the Soft tyre. Lap 48, Lewis Hamilton leads by 1.6 seconds ahead of Nico Rosberg. Lap 49, Jolyon Palmer spins at the top of urn 4, he drops from 10th to 13th. Palmer was having his best race of the season so far and was on course to score his first point. Lap 50, Kimi Raikkonen pits for he final time and goes onto the Supersoft tyre. Lap 53, Lewis Hamilton has been stuck behind the lap car of Esteban Gutierrez and finally gets past him on the straight but Nico Rosberg isn’t far behind. Lap 56, Kimi Raikkonen is right behind Max Verstappen and battling over 5th and 6th place while Gutierrez gets a 5 second penalty for ignoring blue flags.

Lap 57, Verstappen and Raikkonen’s battle continues and it reaches boiling point as Verstappen leads into turn 2 and Raikkonen is right behind. Verstappen moves to the right and behind Raikkonen moves to the right. Raikkonen moves back to the left but Verstappen does the same as well. Raikkonen has to back out and moves left but couldn’t avoid a tap. Raikkonen loses a piece of his front wing en-plate but both continue. Lap 63, Jenson Button having to run near the back of the field after the time he lost fixing his brake problem, retires from the race after an oil leak. Lap 70, Lewis Hamilton wins ahead of Nico Rosberg and Daniel Ricciardo.
