Russian Qualifying Round 15

Nico Rosberg takes pole position ahead of team-mate Lewis Hamilton and Valterri Bottas as home favourite Daniil Kvyat is 11th.

Carlos Sainz Jr suffered a huge crash is Saturday Practise 3 and was stuck under the barrier for 5 minutes as the marshals and emergency crew tried to get to the stricken Torro Rosso. He is recovering in hospital in a great condition. The drivers are allowed to use the Soft and the Super Soft tyres during the weekend.

With 14 minutes to go in Q1, there are yellow flags in sectors 1 and 2 as Pastor Maldonado’s Lotus spins and recovers. Sainz does not compete as Fernando Alonso, Marcus Ericsson, Will Stevens and Roberto Merhi is knocked out of the session. Nico Rosberg is fastest with a lap time of 1:38:343.

Q2 sees a surprise of Felipe Massa’s Williams and home favourite, Daniil Kvyat’s Red Bull is eliminated along with an improved Sauber of Felipe Nasr, Jenson Button and Pastor Maldonado. Rosberg smashed his Q1 time to get to 1:37:500.

The first laps show in Q3 that Rosberg is quickest and fastest in sectors 1, 2 and 3. Hamilton is second ahead of Bottas, Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. Everyone goes out for their final runs expect Hamilton as he sits is in his garage. Rosberg improves and does a lap time of 1:37:113. Hamilton was 0.320 behind Rosberg with Vettel in 4th, 0.852 behind Rosberg.

Merhi* and Alonso* was given a 35 place grid penalty for changing engine parts.

Sainz* is to race after his crash in practise 3 and will start from the pit lane.

That was a better result for McLaren as Button went 13th with Alonso 16th, the race should suit the car better than any track so far. Not a great qualifying for home favourite, Kvyat. The aim for both Red Bulls was to get into Q3 but that proved to be more difficult. Also a great result for Felipe Nasr in 12th place!
